Do Kids Need Chiropractic Care?

We have been very blessed in our chiropractic clinic in Roseville California.  We have the privilege of treating and caring for some of the best people on earth.  While most people come into our office as new patients needing treatment for car accident injuries, or bulging discs and herniated discs, we also get to treat a lot of babies and children.

Dr. Heather Taylor has been part of our team for over three years.  She specializes in pediatrics and pregnancy, and sees a lot of babies that our referred to our office by pediatricians’ offices for things like “latching problems” during nursing.  She also sees a lot of moms and future moms during pregnancies to help make sure their bodies are ready for the challenges of labor and delivery.

Many of our patients see these babies in our office and ask how chiropractic care can help infants and children.

As adults, most of us are familiar with daily aches and pains. Unfortunately, research shows that children are just as likely to experience these problems as we are. Studies show that as many as half of all kids have weekly headaches or back pain. Some of the most common causes of musculoskeletal pain in children are sports, heavy backpacks, being overweight, scoliosis and stress.  Studies show that pain in childhood and adolescence is likely to lead to chronic pain in adulthood.

Since many adults see chiropractors for musculoskeletal pain relief, it’s not surprising that parents who benefit from chiropractic would also take their kids for adjustments We all want to make sure that any type of care or treatment we get for our kids is safe and effective. Naturally, it makes sense that parents who are considering taking their child to a chiropractor want to make sure that it is safe, too.

Is Chiropractic Care from Birth to Adolescence Safe?

There was a study which was a survey of 956 European chiropractors from 2012. In this paper, 921 of the chiropractors reported an average of 21.5 children patients each month for a total of 19,821 pediatric patients per month in the clinics. In this group of doctors, about 8% of all their patients were under 18.

Negative Side Effects

791 of the chiropractors reported 557 “negative side effect” in their pediatric patients. 534 (95.9%) of these were mild symptoms (like crying after the adjustment), 23 (4.1%) were moderate, and there were zero severe side effects.

The majority of adverse reactions reported were simple muscle soreness or stiffness after the adjustment that resolved within a few hours.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Infants and Children?

To the question, Is chiropractic care safe for infants and children, the answer is a resounding YES!  While there can be some mild side effects to the adjustment, most studies show that these are mild and short term (usually lasting minutes to hours).

We also have to remember that no treatment chiropractic or medical is without side effects.  If we were to compare negative reactions to vaccinations compared to chiropractic care, the comparison would be vastly more serious and common for vaccinations than a chiropractic adjustment.

But at our Roseville chiropractic clinic we take our safety precautions even one step further.  No infant or small toddler ever gets adjusted “manually” in our office.  Manual adjustments occur when chiropractic uses his/her hands to adjust the spine and it makes a popping noise.  In our clinic all infants and toddlers are adjustment by an activator instrument which is very gentle and super safe.  There is virtually no risk of negative side effects.
